Yew is one of Britain’s most prized and characterful native timbers, and a truly special choice for a handmade walking stick crook. Its striking contrast between the rich, warm orange-red heartwood and the pale cream sapwood gives finished pieces an appearance unlike any other wood — no two blanks are ever the same. Despite its relatively modest density, Yew is exceptionally tough and resilient, with a natural flexibility that has made it legendary in British craft traditions for centuries.

The blank provides enough material to create a traditional shepherd’s crook style handle or a more personalised shaped handle to suit your own design. It carves, rasps and sands beautifully, and finishes to a rich, lustrous surface under oil or wax that really brings out the natural colour contrast.
