Xylia (Xylia xylocarpa), also known as Pyinkado or Indian Ironwood, is a remarkable Southeast Asian hardwood with a well-earned reputation for exceptional hardness and durability. Rich reddish-brown to dark brown with an interlocked grain that can produce an attractive ribbon or wavy figure, it is a timber of real substance — dense, heavy, and deeply satisfying to work when the tools are sharp.
Pyinkado has long been prized in its native Burma and India for heavy construction and engineering applications — a testament to its extraordinary toughness. On the lathe, that same density translates into a timber that rewards patience and precision with a beautifully smooth, lustrous surface and a finished piece that carries real weight and presence. It is not a common species in UK turning circles, which makes it a genuinely distinctive addition to any collection.
