Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus)
Sycamore is one of Britain and Europe’s finest native hardwoods — a timber of clean, creamy-white to pale ivory tone with a naturally lustrous surface and a fine, even grain that takes a superb finish. It is highly regarded by furniture makers, instrument makers and craftspeople for its consistency, workability and the exceptional figure it can display. When ripple figure is present, the result is one of the most visually striking timbers available — a shimmering, three-dimensional chatoyance that transforms an already beautiful wood into something truly special.
It works excellently with both hand and machine tools, finishes beautifully under oil, wax or lacquer, and its pale, bright tone makes it equally at home in contemporary and traditional settings.
