Swiss Pear (Pyrus communis)
Swiss Pear is one of Europe's most refined and sought-after fruitwoods — a timber with a quiet, understated beauty that rewards close inspection. The fine, even grain and smooth, almost silky texture give it a quality that is immediately apparent when worked, and the warm pinkish-salmon to pale reddish-brown colour has a gentle warmth that is quite unlike any other European timber.
It is a favourite of instrument makers, carvers, and furniture makers for its exceptional workability and the quality of surface it produces. It turns beautifully, takes fine detail with ease, and finishes to a smooth, lustrous surface that needs little more than a light oil or wax to bring out its natural character.
