Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)

Sweet Chestnut is one of Britain's most characterful and underrated native hardwoods — a timber of real warmth, strength, and natural durability that has been used by craftspeople for centuries. Its rich golden-brown to warm tan tones, straight to slightly wavy grain, and attractive ring-porous figure give it a bold, handsome appearance that improves beautifully with age and a good oil or wax finish.

Often compared to Oak in appearance and durability, Sweet Chestnut is lighter in weight and generally easier to work, making it an excellent choice for furniture, joinery, shelving, and outdoor projects alike. It is naturally durable without treatment, and its tannin-rich nature means it responds well to iron-based finishes for a striking aged effect.
