Spalted Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

Spalted Beech is European Beech transformed by nature — the distinctive black zone lines and subtle colour variation caused by fungal activity during the early stages of decomposition give each piece a unique, painterly quality that no two pieces share. The spalting process is arrested before any structural integrity is lost, leaving timber that is fully workable and sound, but with a character and figure that is entirely its own.

This piece displays light spalting — subtle zone lines and gentle colour variation that add interest without overwhelming the natural warmth of the Beech. It works well with sharp tools, finishes smoothly, and responds beautifully to oils and clear lacquers that allow the natural figure to shine through.
