A wonderfully characterful pen blank crafted from Spalted Beech (Fagus sylvatica), a native British hardwood transformed by nature into something truly unique. Spalting is a natural process caused by fungal activity in the wood, creating dramatic black zone lines and striking colour variations that make every blank completely one of a kind.
Wood Characteristics
- Colour: Pale cream to light tan with dramatic black zone lines and patches of colour variation — no two blanks are alike
- Grain: Fine and straight with a smooth, even texture typical of Beech
- Hardness: Medium hardness — slightly softer than unspalted Beech but still very workable
- Finish: Sands and polishes beautifully; the spalting patterns become even more striking under a clear finish
- Workability: Turns well; take care with heavily spalted areas which may be slightly softer — sharp tools recommended
