Spalted Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
Spalted Beech is one of the most visually dramatic turning timbers available — European Beech that has undergone a natural fungal process, creating bold black zone lines, streaks and colour variations that make every piece completely unique. No two spalted blanks are ever the same, and the contrast between the pale cream Beech and the dark spalting lines gives finished bowls and vessels a striking, organic character that is impossible to replicate artificially.
Beech itself is a fine, even-grained hardwood that turns cleanly and finishes well — the spalting adds visual drama without significantly compromising workability, provided the blank is not over-spalted. This piece has been selected at a stage where the timber retains good structural integrity while displaying excellent figure.
