Sapele Pen Blank

A classic and elegant pen blank crafted from Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum), a prized West and Central African hardwood widely regarded as one of the finest turning and finishing timbers available. Sapele is celebrated for its rich reddish-brown colouring and distinctive interlocked grain that produces a beautiful, lustrous ribbon figure — making it a perennial favourite among pen turners.

Wood Characteristics

• Colour: Rich reddish-brown to golden-brown with a warm, deep tone that mellows beautifully with age
• Grain: Interlocked, producing a highly distinctive and attractive ribbon or stripe figure — the hallmark of Sapele — with a natural chatoyance that shifts in the light
• Hardness: Moderately hard to hard — good durability with a quality feel in the hand
• Finish: Polishes to an outstanding natural lustre; the ribbon figure becomes dramatically more pronounced under a finish
• Workability: Turns very well with sharp tools — one of the most rewarding timbers to work with at the lathe
