Sapele is a popular African hardwood prized for its rich reddish-brown colour and the striking interlocked grain that produces a distinctive ribbon or rope figure, particularly on quartersawn surfaces. A close relative of mahogany, it shares that same warmth and elegance but with added visual drama. It turns very well on the lathe — light, controlled cuts bring out the best of its figure, and oil finishes deepen its natural colour and lustre to beautiful effect.
