Familiar as a furniture and flooring wood, it is rarely celebrated in the pen turning world, yet it produces beautifully warm, characterful blanks with an open, pronounced grain that gives each pen a bold, natural look.

What makes Red Oak particularly exciting for the experimental pen maker is how readily it accepts dyes and stains. Its open grain structure drinks in colour, allowing you to achieve rich, deep tones or striking contrasts that many denser, tighter-grained species simply won't take as well.
