Padauk is one of the most visually striking hardwoods available — its vivid, almost luminous orange-red colour is unlike anything else in the timber world, and it makes for a crook handle that genuinely stops people in their tracks. Hard, dense and strong, it is also an excellent performer in use, with good resistance to wear and a natural stability that makes it well suited to handled items. It works well with both hand and machine tools, carves cleanly and finishes to a smooth, vibrant surface under oil or lacquer.

Over time, Padauk’s colour deepens and mellows from vivid orange-red to a rich, warm reddish-brown — a natural process that gives finished pieces a distinguished, aged quality that many makers prize highly.
