Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii)
African Padauk is one of the most vivid and immediately striking of all hardwoods — freshly worked, it presents an extraordinary bright orange-red colour that is unlike almost any other timber. Over time it mellows to a rich reddish-brown, but even aged it retains a warmth and depth that makes it a standout choice for furniture, turning, musical instruments, and decorative work.
It is a dense, stable timber with a coarse but even grain that works well with both hand and machine tools, and it finishes to a smooth, lustrous surface. Its exceptional stability makes it particularly valued for applications where movement needs to be minimised.
