African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii)
Padauk is one of the most dramatically coloured timbers on the planet — freshly turned, it blazes a vivid, almost fluorescent orange-red that gradually mellows to a rich, deep reddish-brown over time. Dense, stable, and a genuine pleasure to turn, it takes an exceptional finish and produces bowls with a weight and warmth that commands attention in any room.
This blank is, quite simply, massive. At 13.5 inches (343mm) in diameter, it may well be one of the largest Padauk bowl blanks available anywhere in the UK right now. If you're after a statement piece — a large platter, a wide-rimmed display bowl, or a centrepiece that fills a lathe — this is it. From the late John Boddy's personal collection; old-growth stock of a scale and quality that simply isn't coming back.
