A beautifully figured pen blank crafted from Ovangkol (Guibourtia ehie), a West African hardwood also known as Amazique or Mozambique. Closely related to Bubinga, Ovangkol is prized by pen turners for its rich golden-brown tones, striking dark striping, and excellent finishing qualities — producing pens with a bold, sophisticated character.
Wood Characteristics
- Colour: Warm golden-yellow to reddish-brown with distinctive dark brown to black stripes — creating an attractive, eye-catching pattern
- Grain: Interlocked to wavy, producing a pronounced ribbon or stripe figure — particularly striking on quartersawn faces
- Hardness: Hard and dense — excellent durability and a quality, substantial feel in the hand
- Finish: Polishes to a superb natural lustre; the bold striping and warm tones are dramatically enhanced under a finish
- Workability: Turns well with sharp tools; the interlocked grain benefits from steady, careful cuts
