Milk Pear (Sideroxylon inerme), also known as White Milkwood, is a southern African coastal hardwood with a quiet, understated beauty that rewards closer inspection. Pale creamy-white to light yellowish-brown with a fine, even grain, it has a clean, smooth quality that turns and finishes exceptionally well — producing a crisp, refined surface that takes detail beautifully and accepts oils and lacquers with ease.
Milk Pear is not a timber you'll encounter every day, which makes it a genuinely interesting and somewhat rare addition to any turning collection. Its pale, clean tones make it a versatile choice — equally suited to natural finishes that let the wood speak for itself, or as a canvas for dyes and stains where the light base colour allows colours to sing.
