Matumi is a robust and attractive southern African hardwood with a warm reddish-brown to tan tone and a straight to slightly interlocked grain. It turns cleanly, holds detail well, and finishes to a smooth, even surface — making it a reliable and handsome choice for spindle turning projects.
- Species: Matumi (Breonadia salicina) — also known as Mingerhout or Matumi Mahogany
- Origin: Southern / East Africa
- Grain: Straight to slightly interlocked
- Colour: Warm reddish-brown to tan
- Janka Hardness: Approx. 1,820 lbf — a hard, stable timber
- Suitable for: Decorative spindles, tool handles, finials, wands, knobs, small turned items
Note: Matumi is the common trade name used in southern Africa. The same species is sometimes referred to as Mingerhout in South Africa.
