Mappa Burr (Populus nigra)

Mappa Burr is one of Europe's most spectacular and sought-after decorative timbers — a wild, swirling burl wood cut from the burrs of Black Poplar trees, prized for its extraordinary figuring and the almost hypnotic patterns it produces. No two pieces are alike; each slab is a unique expression of the tree's growth, with tight, swirling eyes, irregular grain, and a warm golden-brown to honey tone that finishes to a stunning lustre.

It is a favourite of furniture makers, turners, and artists working with live edge slabs, and its relatively light weight for a decorative timber makes it practical to work with. Skim planed to 40mm, these pieces retain their natural live edges and all the wild character that makes Mappa Burr so special.
