Lime (also known as Linden or Basswood) is one of the most popular and highly regarded timbers for wood carving — and for good reason. Its fine, even grain, soft texture and exceptional ability to hold crisp, clean detail make it a joy to work with both hand tools and knives. It cuts smoothly in all directions without tearing, making it ideal for the kind of flowing, three-dimensional shapes that walking stick heads and animal carvings demand.

Supplied at approximately 125 × 60 × 200mm, this medium-sized blank offers extra material compared with smaller carving blocks, giving more scope for shaping detailed walking stick handles, larger animal heads and character carvings. It is particularly well suited to carving dogs, ducks, birds and other animal heads, as well as traditional crook-style walking stick handles and decorative pieces with more ambition and depth.

These blanks are supplied as sawn timber, allowing the carver to decide the best orientation and shape the piece to suit their own design. Minor saw marks and slight variations in dimensions may be present and can be removed during the carving and finishing process.

Once carved, Lime takes paint, stain, oil and wax beautifully — making it equally suited to naturalistic finished pieces and brightly painted decorative carvings.

Stock & Availability

Walking stick and carving blanks are prepared from our hardwood stock and may occasionally be cut to order. If a blank is not currently prepared and ready to dispatch, we will select suitable timber and cut your piece specifically for your project.

As with all natural timber products, each blank will have its own individual character, with variations in grain, colour and natural features.
