Leopardwood Pen Blank

A truly spectacular pen blank crafted from Leopardwood (Roupala montana), a South American hardwood that earns its name from its extraordinary spotted ray figuring — remarkably similar to the coat of a leopard. One of the most visually dramatic timbers available to pen turners, Leopardwood produces pens that are guaranteed to turn heads.

Wood Characteristics

• Colour: Warm reddish-brown base with bold, contrasting dark fleck figuring — the distinctive “leopard spots” are medullary rays revealed on quartersawn faces
• Grain: Straight to slightly interlocked with a coarse texture and dramatic ray figuring
• Hardness: Hard and dense — excellent durability and a solid feel in the hand
• Finish: Polishes to a rich lustre; the bold spotting becomes even more striking under a finish
• Workability: Turns well with sharp tools; the ray figuring rewards careful, steady cuts
