Iroko (Milicia excelsa)
Iroko is one of West Africa’s most popular and practical hardwoods — a timber of excellent durability, stability and warm, attractive appearance that has long been used as a sustainable alternative to Teak. Its golden to medium brown heartwood, often with interlocked grain and occasional darker streaks, gives it a rich, characterful look that improves with age and light exposure. Dense, strong and naturally resistant to decay, it is an outstanding choice for furniture, joinery, worktops and any application where a durable, good-looking hardwood is required.
It works well with both hand and machine tools, though the interlocked grain can occasionally cause some tearout — sharp tools and a careful approach give the best results. It finishes beautifully under oil, wax or lacquer.
