Grown across Europe and into Central Asia, European Walnut has been prized by craftsmen for centuries for its rich, complex colouring, beautiful figuring, and superb working qualities — producing pens of enduring elegance.

Wood Characteristics

• Colour: Rich grey-brown to warm chocolate-brown, often with darker streaking, subtle figuring, and occasional attractive swirling patterns — generally more varied and complex than American Black Walnut
• Grain: Straight to wavy or irregular, with a moderately coarse texture — often producing attractive figure including curl, crotch, and burr
• Hardness: Moderately hard — excellent durability with a comfortable, well-balanced feel in the hand
• Finish: Polishes to a beautiful warm lustre; the complex tones and figuring are enhanced magnificently under a finish
• Workability: Turns superbly — one of the finest and most satisfying timbers to work with at the lathe
