English elm is a characterful native hardwood with warm light to medium brown tones and a wonderfully wild, interlocked grain that produces a distinctive, almost flame-like figure when turned and finished. Long treasured by craftsmen for its natural beauty and individuality, no two pieces are ever quite the same. It can be a challenging timber to work due to its cross grain, but the results — rich, tactile, and full of life — make it one of the most rewarding woods a turner can put on the lathe.
