Elm (Ulmus spp.)
Elm is one of Britain's most characterful native hardwoods — a timber with a wild, interlocked grain and a warmth of colour that few other temperate species can match. Its golden-brown to reddish-brown tones, often with a subtle grey or green cast, are complemented by a distinctive cross-grained figure that gives each piece a unique, lively appearance. Long prized by furniture makers, turners, and craftspeople, Elm has a beauty and individuality that is entirely its own.
It works well with sharp tools and finishes to a smooth, attractive surface. Its interlocked grain makes it resistant to splitting, and its character only improves with age and a good oil or wax finish.
