Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera)

Coconut Palm is a truly unique and fascinating timber — unlike conventional hardwoods, it is a monocot, meaning it has no growth rings, no grain in the traditional sense, and no distinct heartwood or sapwood. Instead, the usable timber is harvested from the outer shell of the trunk, where the density is highest, producing a material with a striking, speckled appearance from the vascular bundles running through the wood.

Because coconut palms grow in tropical coastal environments and rarely grow straight, each piece carries its own character — and that character doesn't always stop at the sawmill. Coconut Palm can be prone to movement and twist after machining as internal stresses are released, so we recommend acclimatising your piece thoroughly before use and working with it promptly once dimensioned.

Species Details

  • Species: Cocos nucifera
  • Common Name: Coconut Palm
  • Origin: Tropical regions worldwide
  • Colour: Golden-brown to dark brown with distinctive speckled figure from vascular bundles
  • Structure: No conventional grain — harvested from the outer, denser section of the trunk
  • Density: High in outer sections — ~600–900 kg/m³ depending on position in trunk
  • Workability: Moderate — can be abrasive on tools; sharp blades recommended. May twist or move after machining — acclimatise before use.
  • Sustainability: Harvested from trees at the end of their productive life — an excellent use of a renewable resource

Please note: Due to the nature of Coconut Palm, some movement or twist after machining is possible. We recommend acclimatising the piece in your workshop before use and working to final dimensions as late in the process as possible.

A wonderful, sustainable, and visually distinctive timber — perfect for turning, decorative work, and projects where something genuinely different is called for.
