French Polish is one of the most revered finishes in woodworking — the technique behind the rich amber glow found on fine antique furniture. Chestnut Products' French Polish is a traditional blend of methylated spirit and top-quality unbleached shellac, very similar in colour to a Button Polish, delivering that unmistakable warm, deep lustre that has to be seen to be believed.

What is French Polish?

The term 'French Polish' can refer both to a range of shellac-based polishes (including Button Polish, White Polish, and Garnet Polish) and to this specific product. Chestnut's French Polish is the classic version — traditional in formulation and finish.

Application

• Apply to bare timber or over a Shellac Sanding Sealer.
• Built up in many thin layers — each coat described as being no thicker than a cigarette paper.
• Requires a specific, time-consuming technique: patience and elbow grease are essential, but the results are extraordinary.
• The satisfaction of achieving a true French Polish finish is its own reward.
