Chamfuta is a striking East African hardwood prized for its rich reddish-brown to deep mahogany tone and interlocking grain, which produces a subtle ribbon figure on quartersawn faces. It turns cleanly, holds detail well, and takes a fine finish — making it an excellent choice for decorative spindle work and turned items where character and colour matter.
- Species: Chamfuta (Afzelia quanzensis) — also known as Afzelia
- Origin: East Africa
- Grain: Interlocking, often with ribbon figure
- Colour: Rich reddish-brown to deep mahogany
- Janka Hardness: Approx. 2,560 lbf — a dense, durable hardwood
- Suitable for: Decorative spindles, tool handles, finials, wands, knobs, small turned items
Note: Chamfuta is the Mozambican/East African trade name for this species. The same timber is widely sold as Afzelia in the UK and Europe.
