Bubinga (Guibourtia spp.)

Bubinga is a genuine old-school turning timber — the kind that used to fill the racks at the great British hardwood merchants before tightening export restrictions made it increasingly scarce. Its deep reddish-brown heartwood, often shot through with dramatic purple veining and interlocked figure, produces bowls of extraordinary visual depth and presence. Heavy, dense, and immensely satisfying to turn, Bubinga rewards the skilled hand with a surface that seems almost to glow.

This blank comes from the late John Boddy's personal collection — old-growth stock sourced in an era when truly exceptional Bubinga was still accessible. Finding material like this today is rare.
