A rare and richly coloured pen blank crafted from Brown Oak (Quercus robur), a naturally occurring form of European Oak that has been transformed by the beef steak fungus (Fistulina hepatica) into something truly special. The fungal infection causes the normally pale Oak heartwood to develop a deep, warm chocolate-brown colouring — producing a timber that combines the strength and character of Oak with a dramatically richer, darker appearance.
Wood Characteristics
- Colour: Deep, rich chocolate-brown to warm reddish-brown — a dramatic transformation from standard Oak, with the characteristic silver grain rays still visible throughout
- Grain: Straight to slightly wavy with a coarse, open texture — the prominent medullary rays (silver grain) remain a distinctive feature, now beautifully contrasted against the dark background
- Hardness: Hard and dense — excellent durability and a solid, quality feel in the hand
- Finish: Polishes to a warm, rich lustre; the deep colour and ray figure are dramatically enhanced under a clear finish
- Workability: Turns well with sharp tools — a deeply satisfying timber to work with
