Bloodwood (Brosimum rubescens)
Bloodwood is one of the most visually arresting timbers in the world — its name says it all. The heartwood is a vivid, deep crimson red that is unlike almost any other naturally occurring timber colour, and it holds that colour remarkably well over time. Originating from the tropical forests of South America, it is a dense, hard timber that works and finishes beautifully, rewarding careful technique with a lustrous, jewel-like surface.
It is a favourite among turners and craftspeople for small decorative pieces, pen blanks, jewellery boxes, and inlay work — anywhere that a bold, rich colour is called for.
