Banksia seed pods are one of the most distinctive and sought-after natural materials in woodturning. Native to Australia, these dried pods have a uniquely porous, honeycomb-like internal structure that, once turned and finished, reveals an intricate natural pattern unlike anything achievable with conventional timber. Each pod is entirely unique in shape, size, and internal character.
Turned thin, the open cell structure becomes almost translucent — particularly striking when used for decorative vessels, hollow forms, or lamp bases where light can pass through the finished piece.
Characteristics
- Material: Dried Banksia seed pod (Banksia spp.)
- Origin: Australia
- Structure: Natural honeycomb / open-cell porous core with a textured outer surface
- Each pod is unique — shape, size, and internal pattern will vary
- Suitable for: Hollow forms, decorative vessels, lamp bases, lidded boxes, jewellery, ornamental turning
Supplied
- Dried and ready to turn
- Available in Medium size
- Sizes are approximate; natural variation means exact dimensions will differ between pods
Tip: Banksia pods respond well to slow lathe speeds and sharp tools. A sanding sealer or thin CA glue applied to the surface before finishing helps consolidate the open cell structure and achieve a cleaner result.
