American elm is a characterful hardwood prized by woodturners for its interlocked, cross-grained figure that produces a beautiful, almost woven appearance when finished. Its warm light to medium brown tones, often with subtle reddish or grey hues, give turned pieces a natural, distinctive look that is hard to replicate in any other timber. It is a rewarding wood to turn — the interlocked grain can be challenging, but the results are well worth the effort.
