American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
American Black Walnut is one of the most coveted turning timbers in the world — its deep chocolate-brown heartwood, often streaked with purples and greys, is rich, warm, and deeply satisfying to work. It turns beautifully, takes an exceptional finish, and develops a gorgeous lustre with even the simplest oil or wax. A timber that feels like a premium material the moment you pick it up.
At 102mm thick — a full 4 inches — this blank is genuinely rare. Finding American Black Walnut at this thickness is increasingly difficult; most commercially available stock simply doesn't reach it. This piece comes from the late John Boddy's personal collection, a celebrated figure in British woodturning, and represents old-growth quality that is harder and harder to source.
